The view from the farm

Melissa lives with her husband Jonathan, three dogs, and two cats on three acres in the Shenandoah Valley.  After working as a technical writer and editor at BNA for more than 20 years, she caught the teaching bug and got her master’s degree in curriculum and instruction with a concentration in English for Speakers 0f Other Languages (ESOL) from George Mason University.  She took early retirement from BNA and started teaching ESOL to sixth-graders in Manassas.  Just as their youngest child graduated from high school, Jonathan’s health took a downturn, and they decided that this was a good time to move to the Valley.  They love everything about it!

She has officially taught English for Speakers 0f Other Languages, sixth-grade math, algebra I, and geometry.  Her other paid jobs include reporting on accounting practices and regulation, administering a database for a nonprofit, and counting earthworms.  She has also volunteered as an ESOL teacher, religious education teacher, editor, and singer. Because of her peripatetic upbringing as an Army brat as well as her passion for social justice, she has many pronounced opinions. However, she is always interested in polite, respectful discussion of points of view differing from her own, because diversity is more fun than monotony.
